Shahin Gharakhanian MD, DTM&H, Dip.PH, has expertise in Pharmaceutical Medicine, Leadership/Management, blending achievements in both the US & EU.
He is specialized in HIV Medicine, Viral Hepatitis and Infectious Diseases. SG completed his residency/fellowship in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Public Health within the Paris public and academic hospital system [Assistance Publique – Hopitâux de Paris] and the University of Paris, France. He holds medical licensure in France and a diploma from the Board of Internal Medicine, his sub-specialty being Infectious Diseases. He obtained United States ECFMG Certification. He holds degrees in Public Health, Tropical Medicine & International Health, and has receiving training in Viral Hepatitis. In total, he practiced clinical medicine (full- or part-time) for over 20 years within the Paris Public Hospitals system, one of the world’s largest medical networks, superviseding the work of MDs from numerous other countries. SG started working in the pharmaceutical industry in 1991 and progressed to become Vice-President of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., Medicines Development Group, Global R&D, in Cambridge MA, USA. Within Vertex, his activities covered three main areas, i.e. Strategic Leadership, Clinical Development and Medical Affairs. Overall, he held positions ranging from the General Manager of a full-service Contract Research Organization to Program Executive leading product development, regulatory approval/launch. He thus handled projects for 12 different companies, 10 different brands and four drug launches in various therapeutic areas concerning Asia, Canada, EU and the USA. He has authored/co-authored ~150 abstracts, book chapters, peer-reviewed publications, reports & training courses. He is a member of several international societies, and a regular reviewer for medical journals. In 2011/2012, he founded Shahin Gharakhanian MD Consulting LLC which aims to provide clinical & medical expertise for patient-focused drug evaluation, approval and launch programs.
